JoKa
JoKa's pseudonym is a fitting one given this Philadelphia-based artist's references to humor. Though not explicitly funny, there is a wit and cleverness to the skewed sense of reality in his paintings. The multiple layers of meaning - some absurd and some serious - parallel his process which consists of the seemingly maddening technique of hyperpointillism. JoKa painstakingly covers his canvases with paint applied to the tip of a toothpick and likens the painting to a kind of meditation, wherein the process takes over. While the process is astonishing, JoKa's execution is stellar as the finished product is just as important as the process.

JoKa often draws upon nostalgic imagery layered with the contemporary such as demure and rigid Victorian finery faintly layered over a contemporary nude. He intends for the imagery to slowly seep into the surreal corners of our unconscious, reminding us that a singularity of meaning isn't always possible in the complex world we inhabit.
