Iris Gill Iris Gill, 1970 - 2012, an American expressionistic painter, was born in La Jolla, California. As a child, she spent eight years in South Africa. At the age of two, her father sent her to her room when she misbehaved. After a long silence her parents checked on her. They found Iris asleep with a crayon in her hand. Just in front where she lay, a multitude of vividly colored fish decorated the freshly painted white wall! Iris Gill received her Masters in Fine Art in 1997 from San Diego State University. Her artistic influences included Llyn Foulkes, Frida Kahlo, Alice Neal, Otto Dix, Emil Nolde, Robert Rauschenberg, and Nancy Rubins. She created art with immediacy and passion; with energy derived from deep anguish and an innate creative drive. Her prolific paintings, drawings and sculptures are notable for powerful expressions, understanding and compassion. Iris's paintings honestly confront viewers with issues that include disabilities, sexuality and social concerns. Her art has been exhibited in North America, Australia, and New Zealand. Iris Gill's art is held in private collections and at the Athenaeum Music and Arts Library Permanent Collection, La Jolla, California. Her art and additional information may be viewed at gillartgallery.com.
