Donato Giancola Donato Giancola balances modern abstract concepts with realism in his paintings to bridge the worlds of figurative and non-representational arts. From The Lord of the Rings¹ to Gericault¹s Raft of the Medusa¹, Donato¹s influences encompass visits to the local game shops and pilgrimages to the greatest of museums. Donato recognizes the significant cultural role played by visual art and makes personal efforts to contribute to the expansion and appreciation of the science fiction and fantasy genre that extend beyond the commercial commissions of his clients. To those ends, the artist teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and appears at various institutions, tournaments, and conventions, from San Diego to Rome to Moscow, where he performs demonstrations in oil paint and lectures on his aesthetics. Born in 1967 and raised in Colchester, Vermont, Donato moved to New York City to immerse himself in the inspired and varied art scene immediately after graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University. Formative years in the early nineties were spent as the studio assistant to the preeminent figure painter Vincent Desiderio, and long days of study in the museums of New York. Since beginning his professional career in 1993, Donato¹s list of clients has grown to include major book publishers in New York to concept design firms on the West Coast: notables include The United Nations, LucasArts, National Geographic, CNN, DC Comics, Microsoft, The Village Voice, Playboy Magazine, Wizards of the Coast , Scholastic, Simon&Schuster, Tor Books, Random House, Time/Warner, The Scifi Channel, Milton-Bradley, and Hasbro. Merits range from the Hamilton King Award from the Society of Illustrators in 2008 to sixteen Chesley Awards from the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists, two Artist Hugo Awards for outstanding professional work from the World Science Fiction Society, notable awards from the Art Renewal Center, and multiple silver and gold medals from the juried annual Spectrum: The Best of Contemporary Fantastic Art. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Brooklyn, New York. Joseph Watson I grew up in Gardena CA, a small city south of Los Angeles. There were many non-traditional art forms that surrounded me. This had an impact on how I interpret my experiences and surroundings in my art. I was fortunate enough to learn the aesthetics of great street art as well as great traditional art. I aim to please both crowds with my art. In 1994, in the middle of completing my degree in commercial art at Los Angeles Trade Technical College, I applied and was accepted into the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena CA. Once I started attending, I realized that the way that I conceptualized and created was totally opposite of what was expected. I had to "unlearn" and practice in the way of the masters. By the time of graduation in 2008, I had a full knowledge of what I wanted to do with my art and how I was going to do it. My career after Art Center actually started freelancing as a concept designer for Mattel and then went on to spend five years in the video game industry as a concept and 3d artist. This was fun and rewarding. Now, I am combining traditional methods with urban themes and a "street" way of thinking to create something that causes an emotional connection with the viewer. I'm currently employed at Konami as a 2D / 3D artist. I also have a gallery space downtown where I have monthly exhibits. Several of my paintings are liscensed for lithographs as well as tile murals.
Artist Statement: I am a recomposer of my surroundings. Daily tasks and average people seem to be a strong inspiration for my subject matter. Also, the interaction between large groups of people is something that fuels my artistic thoughts. My paintings tend to explore a full range of brown with accents of other colors. This is one of the signature elements in my work. I prefer to work with acrylic on wood and canvas surfaces. One of my main goals that I try to achieve in my paintings is having the viewer get immersed into the piece and then finding themselves as part of the scene. Single figures are interesting, but when there are many figures overlapped into one image, the eye moves around the scene trying to unravel the story. You will find many stories within my art. No matter where you are from, or when you exist, my paintings are something that you will relate to.
